Tips for a Great Photo Shoot:

If you’re taking the time to look for professional senior portraits, then you’re probably looking for a cut above the rest. With b&b photography, creating unique and outstanding senior portraits starts with getting to know you and your family. That’s why our first step is to have a consultation with you and your parents where we learn more about you, discuss location ideas and (the all-important) clothing options. The consultation is very important in creating a customized session that’s just for you—that’s why it’s included with all of our regular sessions at no extra cost.

Top 10 Senior Portrait Killers:

  1. Wearing the Wrong Clothes. Even professional models have an art director telling them what to wear. Most people don’t know what will photograph well – they have no idea! We do – and we love helping you decide what to wear. Did you know that the wrong clothing can make you look much heavier in a photograph – even if you’re slender!?  Most seniors want to look as thin as possible in their portraits, and clothing makes a big difference. We’ll show you how!

  2. Hair. Trying a different style or having it cut just before your portrait is probably the second biggest mistake seniors make. We put as much effort into making sure your hair looks good as we do lighting and posing your face! Many photographers don’t take the time to attend to the details. We’ll make certain you hair looks as great as the rest of you!

  3. Blemishes. Yuck! We’ve all got them in one form or another. But who wants to see them in your portraits? It’s Mother Nature’s way to mess with us at the worst possible time. Thankfully, b&b has learned to fool her with our digital retouching. Basic retouching is included with all portraits you order from us. That way you’ll have clean, beautiful skin – always!

  4. Time. It takes more than 15 minutes to create a quality portrait! We’re not going to rush you through like some studios – or double book you, anticipating that someone won’t show up. Your scheduled time is just for you. And we try, as hard as we can, to take your session on time and give you the undivided attention you deserve!

  5. Light. Most seniors (and unfortunately, many “professional” photographers) don’t realize how important light is in the creation of a great portrait. The wrong light, or the wrong direction of light, can add 10 pounds to you on film, and accentuate the features you would really like to hide! There’s usually just one direction of light (and it’s different for everyone) that will make you look your best. That’s why you want to pick a professional photographer who understands light and put your trust in them.

  6. Posing. This one can make or break your portrait. The most important word when it comes to posing is natural! The reality is that every picture is posed—the trick is making it look natural. We’ll guide you all the way so the composition and “look” of the portrait is great every time.

  7. Details. Don’t hire a photographer without a sharp eye for details. When viewing their portfolio or interviewing the photographer, find out if they’re picky. You’ll want clothes to be neat, without wrinkles or errors. No stray hairs. No distracting clutter in the background. The goal is to create an image with nothing distracting.

  8. Satisfaction Guarantee. This is the mistake of not choosing a photographer who will guarantee that you will really be happy. Here’s our guarantee: “If for any reason, you are not happy with the images that we create for you, we will do additional poses for you, at no charge, or refund your deposit. If you are not pleased with your final portraits, we will remake them at no charge.” That’s our promise to every client.

  9. Not getting your questions answered. Ask about a photographer’s guarantee! Ask if they will give a tour of their facilities and meet with you in person to discuss clothing, at no charge. Ask them how much time they will spend with you, and how many different poses they will give you from which to choose. Ask if they will remove blemishes. See how much you’ve learned so far?

 10. The Studio. The final, and most devastating mistake that can ruin the most important photographs of your young life… choosing the wrong photographer. Everything depends on this one decision. And hopefully, now that you know the 10 mistakes, you’ll choose b&b photography and avoid this killer mistake!
